5 reasons why astrology is not just New Age nonsense

What is astrology? Why should you bother with it? Is it just a load of new age nonsense or is there something to be said for star gazing after all? Here I share 5 reasons as to why astrology might just be worth paying attention to.

1. Astrology a tool of navigation

Astrology is a mapping system which allows us to look at the precise positioning and movements of the planets in our solar system and to try and interpret the meaning behind these. Symbolic rather than scientific this is not about find an absolute and definite answer but instead taking on the belief that we each have a unique relationship with the sky. The planets are not causing events, rather their movements reflect the activities happening here on Earth. Opening your mind to this idea gives you a sense of a greater connection and meaning and this can change the way you see your world and yourself.

2. It gives us a new language to understand ourselves

We are used to defining ourselves by gender, age, job title, nationality and so on. But these definitions are becoming less relevant as the world begins to shift and change. No longer are male and female satisfactory ways to label men and women, and feelings about where we are from are changing and expanding (as the divisive Brexit shows). Astrology helps us to look beyond this labelling of ourselves and gives us a new language to understand our character and nature, and to accept all aspects of ourselves.

3. It’s really old

Astrology can be dated all the back to 200BC and maybe even further than that. Egyptians, Babylonians, the Chinese, Greeks and Indians all have developed forms of astrology. Over the centuries astrology has risen and fallen in popularity and has been attacked from religious and scientific quarters. Slowly it diminished its visibility considerably, but now in the early days of the 21st century, astrology is gradually becoming more popular. Because of its decline for so long, it’s easy to understand why it’s seen as new age. But it really isn’t.

4. It’s more than your star sign

Daily horoscopes do not comprise the whole of astrology, and your star sign (more accurately your sun sign) does not solely define you. In an astrology reading you explore the position of all the planets, how they relate to each other and what this may mean. As mentioned above, it’s symbolic and down to the interpretation of the individual astrologer which is why I personally don’t believe anything is absolute., but it does allow you to understand all areas of your being that might not fit into the limited definition of star signs.

5. It is a form of yoga

As a yoga teacher , I believe in the concept of “one-ness”. I believe that there is something, not easily put into words, that unites and connects us all, a power that is greater than the things which divide and isolate us. I believe we are both individual and unique beings who are also joined together in collective experience. I believe in something beyond the material world and I do not mind if you call it God, Universe, Source, Essence or any other words you choose to use. And I believe that astrology, like yoga, is another tool which helps us realise our connection to this divinity.

What are your thoughts? Convinced there’s something to it, or still on the cynical side? I am always open for debate and discussion so share your thoughts!
